Other was made in 2020, when the film industry had ground to a halt and director Shanice Kamminga decided that was exactly the moment to make something. With a volunteer crew of twenty, actress Anna Drijver in the lead role, and couture by Iris van Herpen, she created an abstract, visually striking fable about polarisation and the arbitrary lines we draw between ourselves and others.

The film follows ten children guided through a series of teachings by a mysterious figure. A quiet allegory for how prejudice is passed on, and what it costs us. Other was nominated for the Méliès d'Argent at Imagine Film Festival and drew wide attention for its ambition and visual language.

Other was the first short film I produced, made during lockdown with a volunteer crew of twenty and a shared belief that stories still needed to be told. The trust that filmcoach Anna de Beus and Shanice placed in me gave me the space to grow into this industry, and on set I got my hands dirty as well, even in post assisting the VFX artist on masking, the children's glowing orbs and the symbols appearing on the wall.
